1995 — 2006
David joined Manchester United as a 10 year old and progressed through the levels to sign his first professional contract in 2002. David captained the Youth Cup winning team in 2003 and went on to be involved with the 1st team squad making 4 first team appearances under Sir Alex Ferguson before being sold to Derby County for a transfer fee of £1.5 million in 2006.
Derby County Football Club
2006 — 2008
David joined the club in the Championship and achieved promotion to the Premier League in his first season with the Club in 2007.
Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club
2008 — 2011
David was bought by Wolves for a transfer fee of £1.25 million and won the Championship in his 1st season at the club, which was followed by 2 seasons in the Premier League.
Wigan Athletic Football Club
2011 — 2013
David joined Wigan in 2011 and spent two seasons in the Premier League. During this time at Wigan David was appointed the PFA representative for the Wigan Athletic 1st team and also enjoyed a successful loan spell at Blackburn Rovers.
Burnley Football Club
2013 — 2016
While David was at Burnley they won promotion to the Premier League twice from the Championship, in both 2014 and 2016.
Sheffield Wednesday Football Club
2016 — 2019
David played 3 seasons in the Championship with Sheffield Wednesday before leaving the club in 2019.

Preston North End
David joined Preston North End on loan from Manchester United for the first half of the 2005/06 season and enjoyed a successful period at Deepdale playing 25 times and scoring 3 goals.
NEC Nijmegen
Following his time at Preston, David attracted interest from Dutch top flight side NEC Nijmegen and decided to join them on loan for the second part of that season. He made his debut in a 1-1 draw with Ajax at the Amsterdam Arena and became a very popular figure at the club scoring 6 times in 17 Eredivisie matches.
Blackburn Rovers
David joined the former Premier League Champions on loan from Wigan Athletic towards the end of the 2012/13 season where he immediately made an impact scoring on his debut and going on to become an ever present in the Blackburn side for the remainder of the season.

David has represented England at both Under 20 and Under 21 level between 2004 and 2006.
